Luo Fu Mountains
The Luo Fu Mountains have been a holy site since the Zhou Dynasty (1046 – 256 BCE). The mountains are a Taoist sacred site “filled with the Elixirs for Immortals” and a secluded sanctuary isolated from civilization, meaning the abundance of herbal plant life was enormous and access into the mountains were difficult due to its rugged terrain.
It is listed in the Taoist geographic system called ‘The Grotto-Heavens and Blissful Lands’ where they are number 7 out of the Ten Major Grotto Heavens of China. At the base of the Luo Fu mountains system is the Zhuming Grotto which is considered to be a global geomancy ‘acupoint’. The towering mountains overlook the Pearl River Delta area in Guangdong Province of China. Above is a woodblock print from 1639 CE indicating natural sites on the mountains and 31 religious buildings (Buddhist, Taoist, Confucian).

Taoist Master Ge Hong (283 - 343 CE)
During the Jin Dynasty (266 – 420 CE), the Taoist Master Ge Hong lived on the Luo Fu Mountains where he cultivated Tao, internal alchemy and practiced herbology. Here he built structures, which over time would ultimately evolve to become a group of Taoist abbeys, Buddhist temples and Confucian academies, which would generally co-exist for hundreds of years. One of the structures over the course of time would evolve to become Wong Lung Guan, the Yellow Dragon Taoist Monastery.

Taoist Master Lew Kim Yuen (1918 – 2012 CE)
Master Lew was born in Toisan, Guangdong Province China, which is very close to Luo Fu Mountains. His parents died in the early 1930’s due to the civil strife that was happening throughout China. In 1934 Master Lew, then a young orphan, was chosen by affinity by a monk and taken to the Yellow Dragon Monastery where he stayed until 1948. During his stay at the temple, Master Lew considered Master Chin Poi his teacher and he learned the Taoist teachings of the Lineage of the Immortal Lu Tung Bin. Also, during this time, people were traveling throughout China towards the south to escape the wars, famine and the approaching Communist army. The Buddhist and Taoist monasteries and nunneries in the Luo Fu Mountains became a refuge for many traveling people. Thus, Master Lew was fortunate to learn many other disciplines and arts from traveling monks. It is important to note that this way of developing a relationship with a teacher... by affinity and good fortune... is the traditional way in which knowledge passed from teacher to student. It is the same teaching paradigm that we use here at the Intrinsic Project. Fundamentally... if there is an affinity, the student learned. By 1949, when the Chinese Communist Party was officially formed, Master Lew was petitioned out of the temple by a benefactor. This sponsor was his uncle, Master Lau Bun who is recognized as the first person to open a school in America of the Chinese Way of Martial Virtue, also known as Chinese Kung fu. Master Lau Bun holds the position as a 4th generation master of Hung Sing Choy Li Fut. In the 1950’s Master Lew was in Hong Kong making his way through the Hong Kong martial arts world. Here he would learn, teach and interact within this colorful world now full of teachers who had escaped the persecution of the Communist Party. The exact time when he departed Hong Kong for the USA in order to meet his uncle is unknown, however Master Lew did arrive to California. Because of his uncle’s position of respect and authority within the Chinese community in America, Master Lew was given the responsibility to promote peace as a mediator within the family associations in the west coast USA. Master Lew quickly gained a high level of respect as a conflict mediator within the Chinese community in the USA. He became know as 'Um Sook' or '5th Uncle' because of his intuitive nature, confidentiality and neutrality. In 1967 after the death of his uncle, Master Lew then took the additional responsibility of teaching the lineage of the Elixir of Life from the Lineage of Lu Tung Bin. Master Lew joined the ranks of only a few teachers who first broke the traditional rule of teaching the Way of Martial Virtue (martial arts) to students who were not of Chinese ancestry. The Essential Teachings of the School of the Elixir of Life are:
