About CAVIM
CAVIM is a non-profit organization incorporated in the city of Mexicali in Baja California Mexico. We provide a 100% isolated and fully gated refuge for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. We started operating in September 2001 and for more than 20 years we have been the only safe-house alternative in the city, which has a population of over 1 million people.
The Refuge
The refuge has the capacity of housing 24 women and 45 children, but in actuality since the outbreak of COVID in 2020, the refuge has experienced an unprecedented increase of women and children seeking immediate protection from abuse. Over the past 2 years, on average, the refuge has housed up to as many as 35 women and their children. The average length of time that a participant will stay within the refuge is 3 months. We protect the identity of all these victims who we send to the refuge. Access to the facility is totally restricted, available only upon completion of a detail identification procedure. There is total cooperation with local law enforcement agencies in order to ensure that the women and their children stay protected from any harm while in the refuge.
The Services
Upon entering the refuge, women and children immediately receive medical attention for any physical wounds that they may have received. A social worker is assigned to each participant, psychological evaluation is performed and follow up therapy is provided when necessary. Legal advice is immediately made available so that the participant is fully aware of their rights under Mexico Law. This is a critical step since Mexico Law can be extremely complex, thus possibly creating more issues for the mother and her children. For children under 2 years old, a nursery is on site staffed by professional childcare workers. For older children, the refuge works with them to help maintain a stable schedule including the continuation of their formal education.
The Goals
The immediate goals of the refuge are to assist the women and children mentally, emotionally and spiritually by providing a safe, caring and healing environment hidden away from the perpetrator of abuse, thereby giving them time to gain objectivity about their life... thus empowering them to make new positive choices.
A short-term goal is to train these women so they can support their families economically and start a new, independent, violent- free life. Most have no previous working experience or skill which makes obtaining a job difficult. We have currently 4 educational programs in place: sewing, computer skills, cosmetology and cooking. Plans are to increase the variety of education program to include more types of work opportunities.
The ultimate goal: To assist all the women who are physiologically ready to leave the refuge with a positive attitude and skills in hand to create financial income. It is absolutely imperative to help all the women to re-enter society with a new sense of empowerment provided by COVIM therapists, psychologists and lawyers as we all as provide them with the knowledge about their legal rights and the community support systems available to them and their children.
Thank you in advance for your kind support.
